Virtual ESPAnet Workshop: Call for Papers on “Nationalism and the Welfare State”

This virtual workshop brings together scholars with a common interest in comparative and historical welfare state research and provides a virtual platform to present work in progress and receive feedback.

For fall 2021, we invite submissions on the theme of “Nationalism and the Welfare State” to discuss current theoretical and empirical research on the relationship between nationalism, welfare states, and social policies.Topics of interest include (but are by no means limited to):
• How nationalist ideas and/or parties influence welfare state politics and policies,
especially the role of radical right and/or left parties.
• How nationalist ideas and/or parties change different social groups’ access to
• How nationalist ideas and/or parties influence public opinion on social and/or
economic policy.
• The relationship between nation building and social policies.

We are interested in conceptual and empirical contributions that employ qualitative, mixed, and quantitative methods, and approach the above topics from a comparative perspective. We especially encourage early career researchers (PhD Researchers, Postdoctoral Researchers, Assistant Professors) to submit an extended abstract (1 page) to the organisers by October 16, 2021.

The workshop is hosted on Zoom (60 minutes, 1 paper per session). Presenters are asked to provide a working paper a week in advance, which will be circulated to those who have registered to participate. We recruit suitable junior or senior scholars as discussants. After a short presentation by the author(s) and the discussant’s feedback, all participants are warmly welcome to engage in constructive discussion.
