Call for Papers

The Austrian Political Science Association (ÖGPW) is pleased to announce its 10th Annual Conference (Tag der Politikwissenschaft). For the first time, this event is organized with and hosted by the Political Science Department at Central European University (CEU) in Vienna.

The Annual Conference is a forum for the discussion of current research. It brings together junior and senior political scientists from Austria and beyond. This year the theme of the conference is Pushing Back Against the Enemies of Democracy.

We welcome contributions from all areas within the political sciences, including political theory, comparative politics, and international relations, utilizing the full range of methodological approaches.
On issues like re-democratization, democratic resilience, civic engagement, depolarization, the defense of liberal democracy, the interplay between liberal domestic and foreign policy, and the future of the liberal international order.
Cautionary tales as well as democratic success stories – research findings to encourage and inspire.

This being a general conference, papers and panels are not limited to the theme of the conference. All submissions will be considered.

Abstracts should be between 150 and 300 words. The abstract should provide information on the topic, research question, theory, methodology, the contribution the paper seeks to make, and (expected) findings. To enable an intensive exchange in the panels, we ask for submissions that go beyond pure project descriptions.

It is also possible to submit entire panels (4-5 papers). When preparing a panel, please make sure that all paper givers are committed to attending the conference, that the abstracts follow the conference guidelines, and that the composition of the panel is diverse. Please note that participants should not submit more than two papers (either as author or co-author).

The primary conference language is English; contributions in German are welcome but might need to be allocated to an English-speaking panel.

Upon acceptance, submissions will be thematically structured and assigned to panels by a program committee made up of representatives from CEU and other Austrian political science departments.

The conference opens with a public event on Thursday, November 28.
Panel sessions are scheduled for Friday, November 29.

Early October 2024: Notification of acceptance

October 16, 2024: Deadline for registration

November 13, 2024: Deadline for the submission of full papers (5,000–7,000 words)

2nd week of November 2024: Publication of the conference program

Participation fees

Members of the Austrian Political Science Association (ÖGPW) benefit from a reduced conference fee.

ÖGPW members: €80 (regular) | €40 (students)
Non-members: €150 (regular) | €90 (students)

Registration for the conference will open in October on this website.

In special cases, the conference fee may be waived. This requires a written application to the organizing committee.
